Panzer IV Ausf F1 DAK

By: Florin David
Manufacturer: Dragon /Revell

Modifications:
Scratch built springs from brass for the rear mudguards, handles and antenna replaced with wires. The vignette was built entirely from scratch.
Description:
I tried to depict a DAK panzer passing by some ancient ruins. The figurine represents a British soldier of the 8th army. The panzer is Dragon, while the soldier was made by Revell.

The composition of this work is rather simple, but obvious – a tank in the centre with some terrain features around the vehicle. Yet, the work doesn’t show the story – the soldier is hiding somewhere in the corner and I’m not sure it’s a good idea to use a rifle against a tank. The hatch of the turret is opened but nowhere is present (may be the crewman was hit by a rifle bullet?). Terrain is nicely done with rocks and stones of various sizes and ancient ruins. Still, I’d like to see more noticeable traces of the tank’s tracks – it’ll outline your idea of showing a moving vehicle. Painting of the tank is rather simple, though I see that you’ve tried to show us a vehicle of DAK with dusty chassis and typically worn off basecoat. I’d advice you to use some king of wash (pin-wash is preferable) to outline details of perfect DRAGON’s model. Tracks are also need to be worked on – their outer surface should be sandy with polished steel.

At first glance I assumed this was a model of an abandoned tank that was about to be captured. Regrettably the composition of your diorama makes it rather difficult to grasp what is going on and the lack of a commander figure in the open cupola does not help to imply a fully crewed vehicle. The model itself looks well built, but the paintwork is very flat and lacking in variation. This problem also extends to the groundwork of the diorama, which is rather uniform and monotonous in shade. Much more use could have been made of higlighting and shading, and a wider palette of colours would have allowed you to ceate some contrasting areas adding visual interest to the scene.

An interesting display but as with some of the others, neither the presentation nor the title really conveys a storyline or message that would normally be associated with a diorama or vignette. The tank looks nice. I particularly like the scratches and wear to the finish on the hull, though some use of washes to enhance some of the recesses and panel lines and the application of some filters would have really brought this to life. The tracks could use a bit of weathering/wear and dusting commensurate with the scene. The ruin pillars add some nice drama to the scene. Accenting the rocks with highlights and shadows based on lighter and darker shades of the base colour may help add a bit more depth and interest to the landscape. A nice effort here.
