March 2010 - Open

This is the first Open theme for the year and I know you've all been waiting for it, we are very much looking forward to seeing the usual large number of high quality entries.

As the popularity of the open themes nearly exhausts our capacity to judge them we are going to revert to public vote system to determine the result and give our judges the month off.

If you would like to help out with the judging we would love to welcome you to the team. Please use the contact page to send us an email if you would like to help out.

Special rules:
None, go for your life!

Please note there will be no judging this month. The result will be by public vote alone, so make sure you come back and vote before the end of the month.

April 2010 - Group build - the theme is halftrack

The focus of this year’s group build will be the work horse of the modern army, the halftrack. With Dragon giving us a huge range of Sd.Kfz. 251’s there’s also ACE’s Sd.Kfz.250’s and Revels new 251 Ausf C and fantastic FAMO kits there are also several Sd.Kfz.7’s & 11’s and a myriad of other strange vehicles to choose from. As well as the plastic kits there is also a large range of resin kits available making the German WWII forces are well covered.

There are fewer quality options for the WWII allied fan but still plenty to choose from. Hasegawa has an aging but solid M3A1, the Airfix kit is still available, Academy’s new M3 builds into a nice model, Italeri’s new fast build kits give us an M3, and an M3 75mm. There are also some interesting Russian and French vehicles out there and besides the plastic kits there are a number of resin and white metal manufacturers providing some interesting vehicles.

Jump on board and join in the fun, a work of advice focus on finishing one kit and if you have time left over why not try improving your painting skills with a fast build or simple resin kit. Good luck and let’s get some kits finished.

Special rules:
Your model must be of a semi-tracked vehicle. It can be from any nation and anytime period, the more interesting the better.

May 2010 - 70th Aniversary of the battle for France

On the 10th of May 1940 the German forces smashed through the French lines at Sedan in the Ardennes to cut off and surround the Allied forces concentrated in Belgium in operation Fall Gelb. The brilliant Heinz Guderian was behind the radical plan that proved to be a tactical masterstroke brining France to her knees and sealing the fate of the peoples of Europe.

To commemorate the anniversary of this campaign and to remember the millions of people who suffered and lost their lives under the occupation we encourage you to join in and build a model for this competition.

With the recent release by RPM of many of the important French tanks of the period and Trumpeters great Char B1 we have some very good models to choose from on the Allied side. ACE, Attack and trumpeter have a good selection early German armour and there are also a great number of resin kits available for all the combating nations.

Special rules:
You can build any vehicle from any of the combatting nations (France, Germany & Great Britain) that would have taken part in the combat during 1940.

June 2010 - Cats vs Dogs

Theme

The epic battle continues here at the Braille Scale Monthly Competition website between these age-old protagonists. This month you can present us with any vehicle named after a member of either the dog or cat family. Show us your ferocious felines, such as Tigers, Leopard 1/2s, Luchs (Lynx), or Panthers, just to name a few. Dog lovers can fight back with their Staghounds, Greyhounds, Fuchs (Fox), Fennek (fox), Coyotes, walker bulldogs or any other vehicle named after a member of the canine family.

Just to add interest, in addition to our regular competition format (eg gold/silver/bronze), our judging team will also average the scores by category to declare an overall “species winner”. So show us your cats and dogs……… “Here kitty, kitty, kitty….”
